The new one’s headline feature is the high temperature fuel cell (HTFC), a world first. VW is claiming that HTFC is cheaper and more efficient. Then there’s solar panels in the roof which take the shape of the roof line (sort of like a microbus roof, really). The HTFC aids the 62bhp electric motor that’s the primary source of power. The fuel cell keeps the batteries juiced up, bumping range from 104 to 352 km. The solar panel, finally, is your backup.
