Volkswagen used the Los Angeles Auto Show to present a third version of the Up! Concept which, predictably, was an electric version, using lithium ion batteries with a fuel cell system as a range extender. The 61bhp electric motor is housed at the rear, in the under floor space occupied by the combustion engine of the previous UP! Concepts.
This version, called Space Up! Blue, is said to take its visual inspiration from the 1950’s VW Samba Bus. It has a higher roof than the Space Up! that appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show, incorporating glass skylights at the sides and a central solar panel which helps to keep the batteries charged.
