Reva, India’s sole production electric car, powered by a 37 KW AC induction motor, recently got an upgrade. Called Reva NXG, the new version can cover up to 200km without a charge. What’s more, the NXG’s ‘digital dashboard’ sports a wireless touch-screen tablet and integrates all vehicle functions including Internet access, a satellite-based navigation system and an MP3 music player for a price of Rs 2.7 to Rs 3.5 lakh. Also, Reva Electric Car Company has recently signed up with a Canadian company, Hydrogenics Corporation, to develop a special fuel cell to replace the batteries that now power the car. This will use an on-board tank of hydrogen, with oxygen from the atmosphere, to synthesize the required amount of fuel. The concept has been tested in a road worthy prototype but getting the car to the dealerships will take two or three years at least.
